The sudden appearance of chilly mornings and falling dry leaves announces the arrival of autumn.
In Chinese medicine, autumn is the season of the element Metal, which is represented by your Lungs and Large Intestine. Both of these organs are eliminatory channels, which help you 'let go' of what is no longer needed in your lives. Unresolved emotions such as grief or sadness, which is evidently stored in the Lungs, will manifest as physical symptoms. This is the time of the year that dry coughs, acute respiratory congestion, asthma, sneezing, difficulty breathing, tightness in the chest, sinus headaches, allergies and gastro-intestinal complaints are likely to occur.
To prevent any illness it is time to strengthen and nourish your Lungs and Large Intestine by eating the seasonal foods that I have described below, but also by introducing more pungent or spicy foods into your diet; ginger, cinnamon, garlic, wasabi, paprika, chilli, to name a few. Begin with steaming and boiling your food. The aim of this is to build up your blood so it keeps you warm as the weather cools down.
