Spring is in the air. Springtime is acknowledged as the first season of the year, and for this reason it's a time of new beginnings and regeneration. I am eager to dust off the winter cob webs, and get outside to spend more hours in the sun to exercise, socialise and have some fun!
From a traditional Chinese perspective - there is an element, a season, an organ, that is most sensitive and an emotion that is associated with a specific time of year. In Spring the emphasis is on strengthening and nourishing your Liver and Gallbladder. Instead of eating hearty, warming and slow cooked foods, Spring prompts you to cook food at a higher temperature for a shorter amount of time; stir frying, grilling, steaming food is ideal. Intuitively my body craves for more raw foods such as salads, smoothies and juices....and it's the best time to do a detox! Sour is the flavour that stimulates your Liver and Gallbladder, so I encourage you to eat more lemons and limes. Also bitter foods cleanse your Liver, so I encourage you to introduce rocket, radicchio, dandelion greens (or tea), chamomile, dill, kale, sesame seed, turmeric into your diet.
