I am always thrilled to welcome summer because it brings such an abundance of beautiful produce, that brings joy to my heart - apricots, asparagus, beans, peas, peaches, nectarines, strawberries, raspberries, wild salmon, crab, lobster to name a few.
From a traditional Chinese perspective - there is an element, a season, an organ, that is most sensitive and an emotion that is associated with a specific time of year. Being in summer the emphasis is on strengthening and nourishing your Heart and Small Intestine. As the temperatures creep up it is the ideal time to introduce more raw foods into your diet; a perfect time to eat more salads, and indulge in juices and smoothies. Food preparation should be quick and easy so you can get outside and enjoy the sun, sea, friends and family.
Bitter is the flavour that stimulates your Hearth and Small Intestine, so I encourage you to eat seasonal summer produce such as lettuce, watercress, endive, turnip, celery, asparagus, alfalfa, quinoa and amaranth.
