I was eager for winter to come along, particularly after a long, warm autumn. I enjoy the prospect of unpacking my winter woolies, keeping warm, cosy and rested. Instead of raw foods my body intuitively starts to crave for warming breakfasts, hearty soups, meat casseroles, roasted vegetables and rich gooey (gluten, sugar free) deserts.

From a traditional Chinese perspective - there is an element, a season, an organ, that is most sensitive and an emotion that is associated with a specific time of year. Being in winter the emphasis is on strengthening and nourishing your Kidneys and Bladder.  It's time to cook your meals longer over a lower heat, roasting your vegetables and baking your fish.  I am not saying you can't have any raw foods. I love salads in winter so I tend to use kale, fennel, witlof, silverbeet, spinach, chicory, together with root vegetables or dark foods (which is heaven for your Kidneys) - black beans, adzuki beans, black sesame, dark miso.
